The Giant Cake is the first kids’ bedtime story in the Fairy Tales, Myths, and Legends of Elfishki series. The iPad app has already received several awards, glowing reviews and holds a perfect rating of five stars. Three more interactive books for children will hit the iTunes Store in 2012.
They are inspired by the best fairy tales such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, and the most famous of the Grimm Brothers' fairy tale stories for kids.
You may view the application directly on watching their YouTube video! They also have many other stories, artwork, and videos that you are more than welcome to look at on Elfishki's website!
Additionally, you may "follow" them on Twitter or "like" them on Facebook!

My Review:
It was illustrated beautifully with detailed images! To be honest, my Goddaughter is three years old and extremely hyperactive. She can barely sit still long enough to finish eating, so you can imagine my surprise when I allowed her to use the Elfishki and the Giant Cake Application I had recently downloaded on my iPad, and she showed great interest! She LOVED the detailed stories and the beautiful pictures. She enjoyed touching the screen everywhere to see what images allowed her to interact with, and all the noises they made! Its not just for entertainment, but its a GREAT educational learning aid as well! It asked her questions for reading comprehension, it allowed her to retell short portions of the story to be sure she was paying attention, it even allowed her to try and predict what would happen next. It seemed as though every page she was laughing and showing me what it was doing now. I know many mommy's out there are busy and could use a break to do laundry or dishes, so let me emphasize on ONE of the many GREAT features, the application actually reads to the child! Your not forced to sit there and read and then let them play, it reads and allows them to interact so that it gives you time to finish chores or to kick back for a bit. By the time it was finished, she was ready to do it all over again. The entire application was just phenomenal! Definitely a 5 out of 5 star rating!
I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

ReplyDeleteI was just in a meeting today about interventions for elementary school children who are at least one grade level behind in reading. One of the strategies found to be measurably successful was supplemental reading "games" on the ipad. After reading your review on this particular interactive book I am excited to try it for a few reasons. One, you mentioned that it captures and sustains attention...HUGE issue with many children. Two, using prior knowledge, making predictions, and answering essential questions related to the text are specific skills that are taught in elementary school. Third, the fact that these particular stories ask broad depth questions that require higher level thinking are tremendous for students to learn to learn...which of course is important for children at every level of learning and will certainly create better readers and thinkers! Thank you SO much for letting me know about this series...perfect timing!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great interactive application for children that offers some educational benefit.
